The CRC had been strengthened by the formation of the Revolutionary Communist Alliance (ACR) by dissident members of the reformist Revolutionary Socialist Workers Party (POSR). Due to the support of the ACR, the PSR became the second largest Marxist political party in France behind the French Workers Party. The PSR was led by Edouard Vaillant, who sought to be the middle ground between moderate socialists (Jean Jaures, Paul Brousse) and Marxists (Jules Guesde, Paul Lafargue). European Socialism and the Conflict in Central America $42.9 The crisis in Central America has afforded numerous transnational, regional, and extracontinental actors the opportunity to become involved in an area traditionally considered a reserve and special zone of influence for the United States. One notable example of this phenomenon has been the engagement of European Socialist and Social Democratic parties in the region. Their active involvement in Central American issues (and the opposition many of their leaders have expressed toward American policy in the region) has represented a significant departure for parties which have been broadly supportive of US foreign policy initiatives and objectives since the late 1940s. The monograph analyzes the Central American policies and perspectives of the three European Socialist and Social Democratic partiesthe Spanish PSOE, the French PS, and the West German SPDwhich have been most active in the region. Chapter 1 explores the sources of European Socialist interest in Central America, seeking to place this concern in a historical context which takes into account developments both in Western Europe and in the international Social Democratic movement over the last two decades. Chapters 2 through 4 focus on the parties individually, providing case studies of the initiatives undertaken by the PSOE, PS, and SPD with respect to Central America. Each of these chapters places the Central American issue in the context of national foreign policy, assessing its relative importance and identifying those factions and personalities within each party who have shaped policy toward that region. The conclusion discusses the impact and significance of Europan Socialist engagement in Central America. Party Leadership and Revolutionary Power in China $71.7 Originally published in 1970, this volume consists of essays by twelve leading scholars from the United States and Britain, all of whom concentrated their studies on the problems of China. Their papers were originally written for a conference on the Chinese Communist Party, held at Ditchley Park, England, in July 1968. During the discussions, a number of themes emerged as the factors governing the evolution of the Party. These related to problems of leadership, power and the revolutionary struggle within the Party and their effect on Chinese society. The authors subsequently revised their papers, highlighting these problems within the realm of their own subject, ranging from the power elite and the Central Committee to the village leadership and the role of the Army. The editor, in his introduction, throws further light on the leadership and power struggle, on Maos role and on the effects of the Great Cultural Revolution. The country has undergone a remarkable transformation on a scale similar to that of the Industrial Revolution in the West. The most remarkable part of this transformation, however, has been left largely untold’the central role of the Chinese Communist Party. As an organization alone, the Party is a phenomenon of unique scale and power. Its membership surpasses seventy-three million, and it does more than just rule a country. The Party not only has a grip on every aspect of government, from the largest, richest cities to the smallest far-flung villages in Tibet and Xinjiang, it also has a hold on all official religions, the media, and the military. The Party presides over large, wealthy state-owned businesses, and it exercises control over the selection of senior executives of all government companies, many of which are in the top tier of the Fortune 500 list. In The Party , Richard McGregor delves deeply into China’s inner sanctum for the first time, showing how the Communist Party controls the government, courts, media, and military, and how it keeps all corruption accusations against its members in-house. The Party’s decisions have a global impact, yet the CPC remains a deeply secretive body, hostile to the law, unaccountable to anyone or anything other than its own internal tribunals. It is the world’s only geopolitical rival of the United States, and is steadfastly poised to think the worst of the West. In this provocative and illuminating account, Richard McGregor offers a captivating portrait of China’s Communist Party, its grip on power and control over China, and its future. |

Party’s Over – Revised $10.49 The world is about to run out of cheap oil and change dramatically. Within the next few years, global production will peak. Thereafter, even if industrial societies begin to switch to alternative energy sources, they will have less net energy each year to do all the work essential to the survival of complex societies. We are entering a new era, as different from the industrial era as the latter was from medieval times. In The Party's Over, Richard Heinberg places this momentous transition in historical context, showing how industrialism arose from the harnessing of fossil fuels, how competition to control access to oil shaped the geopolitics of the 20th century, and how contention for dwindling energy resources in the 21st century will lead to resource wars in the Middle East, Central Asia, and South America. He describes the likely impacts of oil depletion, and all of the energy alternatives. Predicting chaos unless the U.S. — the world's foremost oil consumer — is willing to join with other countries to implement a global program of resource conservation and sharing, he also recommends a "managed collapse" that might make way for a slower-paced, low-energy, sustainable society in the future.More readable than other accounts of this issue, with fuller discussion of the context, social implications, and recommendations for personal, community, national, and global action, Heinberg's updated book is a riveting wake-up call for humankind as the oil era winds down, and a critical tool for understanding and influencing current U.S. foreign policy. |

Excerpt: The Commonwealth of Kentucky () is a state located in the East Central United States of America. As classified by the United States Census Bureau, Kentucky is a Southern state. Kentucky is one of four U.S. states constituted as a commonwealth (the others being Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts). Originally a part of Virginia, in 1792 it became the 15th state to join the Union. Kentucky is the 37th largest state in terms of total area, the 36th largest in land area, and ranks 26th in population. Kentucky is known as the “Bluegrass State”, a nickname based on the fact that native bluegrass is present in many of the pastures throughout the state, based on the fertile soil. It made possible the breeding of high-quality livestock, especially thoroughbred racing horses. It is a land with diverse environments and abundant resources, including the world’s longest cave system, Mammoth Cave National Park; the greatest length of navigable waterways and streams in the Lower 48 states; and the two largest man-made lakes east of the Mississippi River. It is also home to the highest per capita number of deer and turkey in the United States, the largest free-ranging elk herd east of Montana, and the nation’s most productive coalfield. Excerpt: The Jay Treaty, also known as Jay’s Treaty, The British Treaty and the Treaty of London of 1794, was a treaty between the United States and Great Britain which averted war, solved many issues left over from the American Revolution, and opened ten years of largely peaceful trade in the midst of the French Revolutionary Wars.It was hotly contested by Jeffersonians but was ratified by Congress and became a central issue in the formation of the First Party System. The treaty was signed in November 1794, but was not proclaimed to be in effect until February 29, 1796. The terms were designed primarily by Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton with strong support from President George Washington and chief negotiator John Jay. The treaty increased trade and averted war, which pleased both sides. Jay obtained the primary American requirements: British withdrawal from the posts that they occupied in the Northwest Territory of the United States, which they had promised to abandon in 1783. Wartime debts and the US-Canada boundary were sent to arbitration one of the first major uses of arbitration in diplomatic history. The Americans were also granted some rights to trade with British possessions in India and the Caribbean in exchange for American limits on the export of cotton. The treaty averted possible war but immediately became one of the central issues in domestic American politics, with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison leading the opposition. They feared that closer economic ties with Britain would strengthen the Federalists. The treaty encouraged trade between the two nations for a decade, but it broke down after 1803. The main parts of the treaty expired after 10 years. Efforts to agree on a replacement treaty failed in 1806; the U.S. rej… More: |

Its capital is the city of Santiago de Querétaro, although in general parlance the name “Querétaro” is used for both the city and the state. Querétaro is bordered to the north by the state of San Luis Potosí, to the west by Guanajuato, to the east by Hidalgo, to the southeast by Mexico State, and to the southwest by Michoacán. The capital city of Santiago de Querétaro is located some 257 kilometres (160 miles) to the northwest of Mexico City. Other important cities include San Juan del Rio and El Pueblito. Excerpt: Arkansas ( ) is a state located in the southern region of the United States. Its name is an Algonquin name of the Quapaw Indians. The pronunciation of Arkansas was made official by an act of the state legislature in 1881, after a dispute between the two U.S. Senators from Arkansas. One wanted to pronounce the name and the other wanted . In 2007, the state legislature officially declared the possessive form of the state’s name to be Arkansas’s. View fr… More: |

In 1927, after the publishing house failed because of French harassment and censorship, the VNQDD was formed under the leadership of Nguyen Thai Hoc. Modelling itself on the Republic of China’s Kuomintang, the VNQDD gained a following among northerners, particularly teachers and intellectuals. The party, which was less successful among peasants and industrial workers, was organised in small clandestine cells. From 1928, the VNQDD attracted attention through its assassinations o… More: |

Many persons involved or commenting on the case, including prosecutor Mike Nifong , called the alleged assault a hate crime or suggested it might be one. On April 11, 2007, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper dropped all charges and declared the three players innocent. Cooper stated that the charged players Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty, and David Evans were victims of a “tragic rush to accuse.” The initial prosecutor for the case, Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong, who had been denounced as a “rogue prosecutor” by Cooper, withdrew from the case in January 2007 after the North Carolina State Bar filed ethics charges against him. That June, Nifong was disbarred for “dishonesty, fraud, deceit and misrepresentation”, making Nifong the first prosecutor in North Carolina history to lose his law license based on actions in a case. Nifong was found guilty of criminal contempt and served one day in jail. Cooper pointed to |

2006 Indian Anti-Reservation Protests $57.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The anti-caste-based-reservation protests 2006, that took place in parts of India, were in opposition to the decision of the Union Government of India, the multiparty coalition ‘United Progressive Alliance’, to implement reservations for Other Backward Classes in central and private institutes of higher education. In the year 2005, based on the recommendations of the Mandal Commission, the government proposed to reserve 27% of seats in the All India Institute of Medical Studies (AIIMS), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other central institutions of higher education for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in order to help them gain higher levels of representation in these institutions. This move led to massive protests by those claiming that the government’s (and the Congress party’s) proposal is discriminatory and driven by ‘vote-bank’ politics. |

8888 Uprising $61 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The 8888 Popular Uprising was a series of marches, demonstrations, protests, and riots in the Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma (today commonly known as Burma or Myanmar). Key events occurred on August 8, 1988, and from this (1988-08-08), it is known as the “8888 Uprising”. Since 1962, the country was ruled by the Burma Socialist Programme Party regime as a one-party state, headed by General Ne Win. The catastrophic Burmese Way to Socialism had turned Burma into one of the world’s most impoverished countries. Almost everything was nationalized and the government combined Soviet-style central planning with superstitious beliefs. In an article published in a February 1974 issue of Newsweek magazine, the Burmese Way to Socialism was described as “an amalgam of Buddhist and Marxist illogic”. The 8888 uprising was started by students in Yangon (Rangoon) on August 8, 1988. Student protests spread throughout the country. Hundreds of thousands of ochre-robed monks, young children, university students, housewives, and doctors demonstrated against the regime. |

A History of Missouri: Volume VI, 1953 to 2003 $19.03 A History of Missouri: Volume VI is the final volume of A History of Missouri. Beginning at the close of the Truman presidency and ending in 2003, the two hundredth anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase agreement and of the organization of the Lewis and Clark expedition, Volume VI explains how modern Missouri bridged the years between the mid-twentieth century and the new millennium. Central to the period was the end of segregation, the demise of bossism in Kansas City and St. Louis, and the impact of cross-state urbanization. Among other developments were the building of the interstate highways and the marked expansion of higher education. Larsen’s overall thesis is that during these years Missouri continued to advance in a restrained manner and at a moderate pace. The Republican party revived, suburbs mushroomed around the central cities, the state government grew and expanded its functions, the population became more diversified, concerns increased for the natural and built environments, higher education was transformed, small towns held their own, and the state declined as a force in national politics. A History of Missouri: Volume VI, 1953 to 2003 is very much a pioneering effort and one that should be welcomed by anyone interested in the history of Missouri, from casual observers to policymakers. |

A History of the Ulster Unionist Party: Protest, Pragmastism and Pessimism $25.48 This is the first substantial history to trace the political development of the Ulster Unionist Party through the years of protest and opposition to Irish Home Rule to the current attempts to bring peace to the Province. An important and scholarly work based on extensive primary source research, it brings to light forgotten historical episodes of contemporary political significance, and provides new angles on old controversies and debates. The book discusses the evolution of the Ulster Unionist Party with reference to competing ideological currents, class and social tensions within the Unionist movement, and the role of leadership figures and maverick personalities. This is a book that maps the party’s historical journey from the dramatic days of Carson to the current predicaments of Trimble. |

RUSSIAN CIVILIZATION AND FUTURE MOVEMENTS. It will be interesting now to note the work Russia has been doing in Central Asia. There can be no doubt that a civilizing influence has been exerted, which, although rude in itself, has bestowed great benefits upon thousands of unfortunate people by checking the raids of the roving tribes, and by abolishing the slave trade, and instituting in its place some resemblance of peace and order; at the same time it is impossible to read the history of her advances without seeing that these advances have been made by ambitious generals seeking personal distinction, and animated by a fixed desire for acquiring territory ; and that pretexts of all sorts have been made out for the purpose of covering with a show of justice the harshness and illegality of these frequent extensions, andof the severe blows inflicted upon the unfortunate and often unoffending people ; in many instances the Russians simply imitat- . ing the Turcoman plan of making raids without excuse or justification, the only difference being that in Russia’s raids, where she was successful, there she remained. Her Government, when it has annexed a country, is tyrannous and oppressive; it is unable to keep its own large cities in order without the most severe regulations and police system; and the extreme badness of Russian government and civilization may be inferred from the existence and state of her Siberian prisons. The principal promoter of the idea of a Russian invasion of India was General Skobe- leff, he and a large party in Russia having always looked with longing eyes upon Constantinople, which they believe will one day become a Russian city, giving them a safe refuge in the Black Sea, and a convenient sally-port into the Mediterranean. African Nationalism From Apartheid To Post-Apartheid South Africa. A Critical Analysis Of Anc Party Political Discourse $34.9 With the help of discourse analysis and ideology critique, this study establishes a theoretical framework to analyse African nationalism in apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa. Following the constructivist school of thought, the study adopts the assumption that nations are “imagined communities” which are built on “invented traditions”. It shows that historically and analytically, there are two distinct concepts of nationalism: “constitutional” and “ethnic” nationalism. These concepts can be retraced in South Africa where they form the central antagonism of black political thought. The study of post-apartheid African nationalism is placed in its historical perspective by focusing on the major milestones of African National Congress’ discourse before and during apartheid. It demonstrates that throughout its history, the ANC was characterized by the rivalry between concepts of “constitutional” and “ethnic” nationalism. While the former concept found its counterpart in Charterism, the latter was adopted by African nationalism. Though the ANC in its majority embraced Charterism, it continually played with the appeal of an exclusive, racial nationalism. The theoretical and historical contextualisation of the study allows for the investigation of the various dimensions of current ANC discourse on African nationalism. The study analyses different concepts of nationalism employed by the ANC and compares these models to those discussed in academic literature. It finds that in post-apartheid South Africa, the historical dichotomy of Africanist and Charterist nationalism persists within the ANC. While early concepts of nationalism like Mandela’s “rainbow nation” and Mbeki’s “I am anAfrican” paid tribute to Charterism, the discourses on the “African Renaissance” and Mbeki’s “two-nation” address at least leave openings for Africanist interpretations. Furthermore, the analysis shows that nationalism is not only a product of discourse but also one of material |

After the Revolution: Gender and Democracy in El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala $15 “Gender equality and meaningful democratization are inextricably linked,” writes Ilja Luciak. “The democratization of Central America requires the full incorporation of women as voters, candidates, and office holders.” In After the Revolution: Gender and Democracy in El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, Luciak shows how former guerrilla women in three Central American countries made the transition from insurgents to mainstream political players in the democratization process.Examining the role of women in the various stages of revolutionary and national politics, Luciak begins with women as participants and leaders in guerrilla movements. Women contributed greatly to the revolutionary struggle in all three countries, but thereafter many similarities ended. In Guatemala, ideological disputes reduced women’s political effectiveness at both the intra-party and national levels. In Nicaragua, although women’s rights became a secondary issue for the revolutionary party, women were nonetheless able to put the issue on the national agenda. In El Salvador, women took leading roles in the revolutionary party and were able to incorporate women’s rights into a broad reform agenda. Luciak cautions that while active measures to advance the political role of women have strengthened formal gender equality, only the joint efforts of both sexes can lead to a successful transformation of society based on democratic governance and substantive gender equality. |

Alexander Hamilton: Writings (Library of America) $9.99 One of the most vivid, influential, and controversial figures of the American founding, Alexander Hamilton was an unusually prolific and vigorous writer. As a military aide to George Washington, forceful critic of the Articles of Confederation, persuasive proponent of ratification of the Constitution, first Secretary of the Treasury, and leader of the Federalist party, Hamilton devoted himself to the creation of a militarily and economically powerful American nation guided by a strong republican government. His public and private writings demonstrate the perceptive intelligence, confident advocacy, driving ambition, and profound concern for honor and reputation that contributed both to his rise to fame and to his tragic early death. Arranged chronologically, Writings contains more than 170 letters, speeches, essays, reports, and memoranda written between 1769 and 1804. Included are all 51 of Hamilton’s contributions to The Federalist, as well as subsequent writing calling for a broad construction of federal power under the Constitution; his famous speech to the Constitutional Convention, which gave rise to accusations that he favored monarchy; early writings supporting the Revolutionary cause and a stronger central government; his visionary reports as Treasury secretary on the public credit, a national bank, and the encouragement of American manufactures; a detailed confession of adultery made by Hamilton in order to defend himself against charges of official misconduct; and his self-destructive attack on John Adams during the 1800 campaign. An extensive selection of private letters illuminates Hamilton’s complex relationship with George Washington, his deepaffection for his wife and children, his mounting fears during the 1790s regarding the Jeffersonian opposition and the French Revolution, and his profound distrust of Aaron Burr. Included in an appendix are conflicting eyewitness accounts of the Hamilton-Burr duel. Joanne Freeman |

All the Blue Moons at the Wallace Hotel $123.01 In a haunting, uplifting novel about having a dream come true, Fiona Hopper longs to be accepted. She dreams of performing in an upcoming dance recital, and for her family to emerge from the shadows of an unspoken tragedy. From the Publisher Eleven-year-old Fiona lives with her mother and sister in a ramshackle house at the edge of town. More than anything, Fiona wants to perform in an upcoming dance recital. However, Fiona’s mother is unable to afford lessons; instead, Fiona practices on her own and comes to the attention of the local dance teacher. The story is interspersed with events at school and episodes involving her younger sister Wallace, an unusual child who dislikes wearing socks, sometimes wears two party dresses over one another, and has a penchant for weird food combinations. Wallace cares very little about what others may think of her, but Fiona longs to be accepted, and for her family to emerge from the shadows of an unspoken family tragedy. From Publishers Weekly Stone (When the Wind Bears Go Dancing) turns from picture books to middle-grade fiction with a novel about a family devastated by a shocking incident. Set during the Kennedy administration, the story is heavy with references to period TV shows, hand-me-down poodle skirts and Necco Wafers, details that may seem to the target audience as mannered as the characters. The narrator, 11-year-old Fiona, who makes much of her admiration for Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, lives with her younger sister, Wallace, in a dilapidated mansion, surrounded by their withdrawn, ex-sculptress mother’s unfinished statues. Fiona wants to fit in, and she also wishes more than anything to dance, but her passion (partly born from her father’s likening of Fiona to his mother, a Russian ballerina) never transcends plot device. Indeed, Fiona remains more a lens than an effective central character, overshadowed by the unconventional, angst-ridden Wallace and their friend Kit |
