Theme Ideas

What are some good theme ideas for a surprise 50th birthday party?

I’m throwing a surprise party for my mom who will be 50. Any good ideas you’ve heard of for themes for a 50th birthday party.

Make it a destination party. Love to ski, then head to the mountains.

Take a cruise. “Destination Parties” are popular and travel agencies compete to find the cheapest packages.

Enjoy music and theatre, go to New York and take in the symphony or Broadway.

Love the islands, go to Maui.

If you need to stay closer to home and cut the costs think about having a “This Is Your Life Party” at the recipient’s favorite restaurant. Decorate to the nines, have a slideshow from birth to the present, have people give speeches and roast the birthday person.

An Over The Hill Party equipped with black decor and foods, along with all the grim-reaper accents. Everyone comes dressed in black. The guest of honor may be picked up in a hearse. You could do a more modern version of the Over the Hill Party and have a sit-down dinner affair equipped with elegant black and silver serving pieces. Hang classy black lantern lights and serve a elegant fondant cake with black accents.

How about a Golden 50th soiree. Send out formal invitations, fancy set table, lots of gold table decor (candlesticks, silverware, napkin rings, etc.) Make sure the cake is an extravaganza. Perhaps a white cake with gold icing or a dusting of gold decorating glitter.

Wine and cheese tasting party with lots of fancy crackers. Decorations should be classic with linen tablecloths, crystal, china, silver, etc.

A 70′s costume party which would have an emphasis on the birthday person’s hay-day. Or opt for another era like the roaring 20′s, fabulous 50′s, etc.

A Murder Mystery party where all of the guests come in costume to coincide with the theme, but you hire actors to act out the murder story. They will draw in your guests during the evening into the murder and help them to become a part of solving the crime.

Well, that’s all I have for now. Have a wonderful time planning the party. I know the planning stage can be quite a bit of fun and doing things around the birthday recipient without he or she knowing, only adds to the drama and intrigue, and ultimately the got-cha! Have a great time!

Jimi Hendrix: Morning Symphony Ideas CD

Jimi Hendrix: Morning Symphony Ideas CD

$12

Morning Symphony Ideas is an extraordinary collection of previously unreleased studio and home demo recordings. Dagger’s two previous releases, Live At The Oakland Coliseum and Live At Clark University presented the original Jimi Hendrix Experience on tour at the peak of their powers. Morning Symphony Ideas places its focus on Jimi’s songwriting and his unique approach toward developing new material at home and in the recording studio. Where officially authorized albums such as First Rays Of The New Rising Sun and South Saturn Delta gave light to such promising, yet unfinished studio fare as “Message To The Universe” and “Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)”, Morning Symphony Ideas probes even further, providing an invaluable insight into Jimi’s creative process. These six 1969 and 1970 studio and home demo recordings reveal the earliest stages of Jimi’s songwriting technique. “Jungle”, “Room Full Of Mirrors”, and the extended workout “Keep On Groovin’” showcase Hendrix in full flight with Band Of Gypsys drummer Buddy Miles and on “Strato Strut”, with Miles and bassist Billy Cox. These vibrant studio recordings freely intertwine elements from many of the promising songs the guitarist had been rounding into form throughout 1969. Jimi’s home demo of “Scorpio Woman” is equally revealing. Recorded in Maui, Hawaii during his extended July/August 1970 retreat on the island, Jimi wove a host of fertile melodies throughout the song’s embryonic structure. Throughout this fascinating twenty-one minute workout, Jimi intently established the foundation for a host of exciting new ideas he had in development. Singing live over his own electric guitar accompaniment, Jimi expanded upon the “Scorpio Woman” theme by incorporating tantalizing snatches of other familiar phrases and rhythm patterns advanced by the guitarist in 1969 and 1970. Ideas for Development by Adamolekun, Ladipo [Paperback]

Ideas for Development by Adamolekun, Ladipo [Paperback]

$143.39

This book is based on presentations made at the Iju Public Affairs Forum Series between 2006 and 2009. The single theme that runs through all the chapters is how best to improve Nigerias development performance. While the specific topics covered range from political and economic affairs to education, culture, religion and gender, the analysis in each chapter and the recommendations proposed by the different authors focus on how the poor/mediocre development performance record of the country during its first fifty years of independence could be turned around. Overall, the contents of the book cover several of the critical development challenges that Nigeria faced during the first decade of the 21st century. To a great extent, these are the same key development challenges the country faced during the closing decades of the last century; and there is a real sense in which they would qualify as important challenges for the next couple of decades. The contents of several chapters of the book are enriched by the comparative perspectives provided on development experiences of some countries inside and outside Africa. ''Nothing but the theme itself'': Developing variation in the Andante Comodo of Symphony No. 9, by Gustav Mahler.

”Nothing but the theme itself”: Developing variation in the Andante Comodo of Symphony No. 9, by Gustav Mahler.

$49.99

The process of developing variation was a central idea in Schoenberg’s compositional theory, one that he attributed largely to Brahms. This analysis accordingly seeks to uncover the thematic transformations and process of developing variation in the Andante comodo of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, and to show that the entire movement is motivically based on two basic ideas. This is achieved through motivically deconstructing Mahler’s variation methods to show the means of transpositional, rhythmic, intervallic, and other variation methods that he employed. Furthermore, the analysis attempts to lay groundwork for the progress of Adorno’s idea of “total development;” the idea that a single cell or unit could provide the motivic basis for an entire piece of music.

 150 Best Loft Ideas

150 Best Loft Ideas

$15.37

150 Best Loft Ideas highlights the myriad ways a loft can work, and will help you create the loft you love Loft life isn’t just for artists anymore. What began as an affordable alternative to the high-cost of living in Manhattan in the 1950s has become one of the most expensive and inventive ways of living today. From New York to Johannesburg, Buenos Aires to Barcelona, the lofts included in this book are variations on a simple open plan theme begun decades ago. Find lofts that double as both home and art gallery, where an artist’s bedroom invades his exhibition space and the sleeping artist becomes a part of his own permanent collection. See family-inspired lofts with ample space for kids, complete with tire swings hanging from the living room ceiling. From former industrial factories, warehouses, garages, and schools, each loft featured here—whether it is a family home or bachelor pad, an office or an art gallery—offers a unique spin on the traditional concept of the loft.

17 Things I'm Not Allowed to Do Anymore

17 Things I’m Not Allowed to Do Anymore

$6.99

A laugh-out-loud look at all the fun things grown-ups never let you do . . . now in paperback! Jenny Offill, author of 11 Experiments That Failed, describes how tough it is to be a kid, when even the (seemingly) best ideas are met with resistance. The text is short, spare, and fall-on-the-floor funny–not to mention utterly child-friendly. Here, accompanied by Nancy Carpenter”s hilariously clever illustrations, is a day-in-the-life look at a kid as she torments her brother, her pet, her classmates, and, of course, her mother. The theme of this Dragonfly Book is Just for Fun.

Excerpt: Athalia (HWV 52) is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel , his third in this genre. The structural and rhetorical achievements in Athalia project a dramatic concept that may be unique in Handel ‘s output. Commissioned in 1733 for the Publick Act in Oxford , a commencement ceremony of the local colleges one of which had offered Handel an honorary doctorate. The story is based on that of the Biblical queen Athaliah .Oxford was then a center of nationalist and Jacobite sentiment and Athalia was composed in the midst of a controversy about Handel’s advocacy of Italian opera and may have been a pragmatic reaction to this: Handel bowed to English musical taste by writing an oratorio, a genre with which he had had two previous successes. It was first performed on 10 July 1733 at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, conducted by Handel himself. He may have chosen Jean Racine ‘s Athalie as the basis for his libretto because of Jacobite allusions in its plot. Athalia, as presented in the Bible, was a tyrannical usurper who was finally overthrown, whereupon a hidden prince took his rightful throne – a theme obviously capable of a Jacobite interpretation. Handel uses rhetorical planning and symbols to reinstate many ideas of Racine’s that are lost in Humphreys’s libretto. The tonal plan of the oratorio hinges on key associations with rhetorical significance. Handel’s musical treatment echoes the original play’s division into five parts, the characters’ psychological duality and their polarization in pairs, and the acceleration of the dramatic pace towards the end.The rhetorical and structural coherence of Athalia effects specific interpretive choices for performance. It also reveals a musical and dramatic form that anticipates the operas of Gluck and Mozart . It may represent a particular

 A Guide to Good English

A Guide to Good English

$0.99

Scanned, proofed and corrected from the original hardcover edition for enjoyable reading. An excerpt from the author’s INTRODUCTION: Without prejudice to any useful purpose which the book may be made to serve, I suggest in what follows the work I have designed it to perform in college classes. Let the teacher begin with the assumption that in so far as sins against elementary principles are concerned, each student is innocent until he has proved himself guilty. Change the character of the prescribed course in English for Freshmen from one in composition to one which emphasizes primarily the study of literature. Choose literary material which is stimulating, study it intensively with reference to the ideas it contains, and hold students to exactness of comprehension, thought, and expression. At each meeting of the class have a written recitation of five or ten minutes, answering some question on the day’s lesson, usually a textual question or a question of fact, with the object of finding out whether the student has read the assignment and understood it. Then, having had a recitation from each student, the teacher may feel free to devote the rest of the hour to a discussion of the ideas in the lesson, or to any exercise which will make the students feel the value of what they are reading. Once in two or three weeks there may be written a theme, preferably in class, on topics that demand thought, something more than mere exercise of memory. As many as possible of his papers should be returned to the student, who should be left to study the mistakes marked in his papers by the passages in the book to which the symbols point him. The burden of training himself in elementary matters which he should have learned in school should be thrown on him. His progress should be measured by his improvement rather than by his skill in rewriting after specific errors have been pointed out to him. On the basis of these papers pick out as early as

 A Tree on Turtle Island

A Tree on Turtle Island

$2.06

In the fall of 2001, two Chicago women embark on a business trip to Pennsylvania. Quinn had grown up in Pittsburgh and while visiting her childhood neighborhood, her friend, Reed, uncovers a Native American artifact that begins to affect her dreams. In the aftermath of terrorist attacks on America, patriotism is soaring with the theme, ‘United We Stand.’ But the artifact provides a window to a colonial tale, threading the women’s journey into the period prior to the American Revolution when colonists were deciding what ‘union’ meant to them. The women meet fictional heroine, Maggie, who had been a student at the Moravian School for Girls and a blacksmith’s wife living among native tribes at the forks of the Susquehanna River. Shamokin was a multi-national village with a farm and blacksmith shop. Europeans shared tools, farming skills and cultural ideas among several native nations, living for years in peace. When the initial violence of the French and Indian War exploded a few miles away, everyone fled. After surviving an Indian attack, Maggie writes reflective letters to her family, also seen, via the artifact, by the contemporary women. Maggie bears witness to early treaty councils and Benjamin Franklin’s idea of ‘united’ colonies, based on the Native American concept of the value of every person in the village. She also witnesses a deep tear happening in the first fabric of America while colonial settlers try to piece together a patchwork revolution. The tear was born of prejudice, and as the modern travelers knit together their own journey, they find ties to a deeply rooted pattern of violence and bigotry in modern American culture.

A touch of Leri: The beliefs, attitudes and perceptions of an elementary student in Cyprus about his experiences in different music-making and learning practices.

$49.99

This case study explores the music-making and learning practices of an elementary student from Cyprus in different settings, inside and outside school. The musical knowledge of the 6th grade boy was gained from a diversity of music settings that covered a broad educational spectrum from highly structured and sequential to informal and enculturative. The purpose of study was to investigate student's attitudes, beliefs and feelings concerning different learning settings; the student's perceptions of the value of music experiences in these settings; and the intersections of music learning inside and outside school. The settings were school music classes, private piano lessons, community choir rehearsals, traditional folk dance ensemble, drum exploration, and composition-arrangement at home. Three themes emerged from the data. The first theme centered around the influences from others that motivated Leri's attendance and continuation in music classes. The second theme centered around the elements inherent to the settings themselves that facilitated learning and that made Leri want to engage. The last theme focused on thoughts about his future music making and the factors that affected his plans. The participant's enjoyment and valuing of the music settings was connected to his need for active and meaningful participation through which he could express his musical ideas.

 Advanced Calculus: A Geometric View

Advanced Calculus: A Geometric View

$68.56

With a fresh geometric approach that incorporates more than 250 illustrations, this textbook sets itself apart from all others in advanced calculus. Besides the classical capstones—the change of variables formula, implicit and inverse function theorems, the integral theorems of Gauss and Stokes—the text treats other important topics in differential analysis, such as Morse’s lemma and the Poincare’ lemma. The ideas behind most topics can be understood with just two or three variables. This invites geometric visualization; the book incorporates modern computational tools to give visualization real power.Using 2D and 3D graphics, the book offers new insights into fundamental elements of the calculus of differentiable maps, such as the role of the derivative as the local linear approximation to a map and its role in the change of variables formula for multiple integrals. The geometric theme continues with an analysis of the physical meaning of the divergence and the curl at a level of detail not found in other advanced calculus books.Advanced Calculus: A Geometric View is a textbook for undergraduates and graduate students in mathematics, the physical sciences, and economics. Prerequisites are an introduction to linear algebra and multivariable calculus. There is enough material for a year-long course on advanced calculus and for a variety of semester courses—including topics in geometry. It avoids duplicating the material of real analysis. The measured pace of the book, with its extensive examples and illustrations, make it especially suitable for independent study.

Adventures in Fantasy: Lessons and Activities in Narrative and Descriptive Writing, Grades 5-9

Adventures in Fantasy: Lessons and Activities in Narrative and Descriptive Writing, Grades 5-9

$24.95

Adventures in Fantasy offers an exciting approach to teaching narrative and descriptive writing that stimulates a student’s creativity and imagination. Filled with mini-lessons, reading projects, and hands-on writing activities, the book shows teachers step-by-step how to introduce students to the “magic” of creating a complete story in the fantasy/adventure genre. Before fleshing out their stories, however, students are asked to construct actual maps of their ‘fantasyland’ – and then to write a travelogue describing the setting in vivid detail. This initial fantasizing encourages students to be wildly inventive in creating the drama, ogres, villains, heroes and heroines featured in their story, and on the way they learn about the mythic journey. With prompts, rubrics, and reader response forms on reproducible worksheets, the book provides instructions for helping students: Generate story ideas Craft compelling characters Develop a plotline rich with complications Bring the story to fruition Adventures in Fantasy offers teachers a creative method for teaching conventions such as voice, theme, point of view, and attention to the reader. The approach has proven to work well with both advanced and struggling students and is easily integrated with other writing curricula. Praise for Adventures in Fantasy “Follow step-by-step, or pick and choose from Gust’s exhaustive strategies for teaching setting, characterization, plot, dialogue, figurative language, and mechanics. A treasury of information and imagination for middle-grade writing teachers whose goal is to provide students with a means to discover the joy and accomplishment of good story writing.”—David Gifaldi, Vermont College faculty member;fifth-grade teacher, Vancouver, WA School District;and author of Listening to Crickets “Gust describes how he engages his students in order for them to achieve the creation of their

African Art and the Colonial Encounter: Inventing a Global Commodity

African Art and the Colonial Encounter: Inventing a Global Commodity

$75

Focusing on the theme of warriorhood, Sidney Littlefield Kasfir weaves a complex history of how colonial influence forever changed artistic practice, objects, and their meaning. Looking at two widely diverse cultures, the Idoma in Nigeria and the Samburu in Kenya, Kasfir makes a bold statement about the links between colonialism, the Europeans’ image of Africans, Africans’ changing self representation, and the impact of global trade on cultural artifacts and the making of art. This intriguing history of the interaction between peoples, aesthetics, morals, artistic objects and practices, and the global trade in African art challenges current ideas about artistic production and representation.
