”Mrs. Lindsey, word problems CAN be fun!” How constructing authentic problems develop math language. $49.99 Research question. How does direct instruction on the structure of math word problems while students engage in collaborative group work to construct authentic word problems influence math learning?;(1) How does the use of academic language in student created word problems increase over time?;(2) How do students attitudes towards word problems change over the course of the intervention?;Research activities. Context: This intervention took placed in a self-contained 5th grade classroom at an urban K-6 school where the majority of the population was Hispanic. The class was composed of 25 students of which 17 were EL students ranging from Beginning to Advanced CELDT levels. Focus students were chosen based on CELDT, performance during the intervention, and attendance record during the intervention. Methods and data. The intervention occurred over six weeks with two distinct phases where students were given explicit instruction on word problems (phase one) and then created their own word problems in groups (phase two). Academic language was measured by baseline datum through student-constructed word problems, results showed only 12% of students correctly constructing word problems and properly using academic language, but outcome datum showed that 96% correctly constructed word problems using correct academic language. Student performance was measured pre and post by word problem drawn and adapted from the curriculum, Macmillan McGraw-Hill. Attitude data were collected through survey, student journaling, and observation notes. Engagement was monitored through teacher observation field notes. Results. When creating word problems the whole class, as well as all six focus students, improved their use of academic language. In attitude and engagement, all students in the class showed greater interest and demonstrated positive attitudes towards word problems. In survey questions about word problems, 14 students had no confidence in their ability of word problems. By the end |

1 1/2-Litre Grand Prix Racing: 1961-1965 – Low Power, High Tech $31.95 This is the story of a Grand Prix formula that no British constructor wanted but which became one that they would almost totally dominate. It has remained largely overlooked due to the perception that the cars were underpowered and hence unspectacular. Such a perception ignores the significant technical developments that took place that are now taken for granted, such as monocoque chassis construction. It saw the career of Stirling Moss come to a premature end, but in his absence the rise to prominence of a new breed of British drivers in Jim Clark, Graham Hill and John Surtees. Over 200 photos and contemporary technical material outline the engineering achievements as well as the exploits of the constructors. With a foreword by Raymond Baxter. |

10.5/Day of Destruction $14.98 Lock your doors and stand in a doorway as you prepare for action, excitement, and blinding terror in this exclusive DVD double feature! Featuring earthquakes that show no signs of slowing down, 10.5 and Category 6: Day of Destruction are two room-rattling thrillers you don’t want to miss!10.5: Seattle, Washington: dawn. An earthquake trembles with a 7.9 magnitude. It’s the biggest natural disaster to hit the West Coast in over a century. The aftershock hits Northern California, reaching 8.4, splitting the earth and swallowing a train as it cruises along the landscape. The chance of an aftershock being greater than the quake is virtually unprecedented. Dr. Samantha Hill (Kim Delaney), an expert on hidden fault lines, and the President of the United States (Beau Bridges) must race against time to save the lives of millions.Category 6 – Day of Destruction: Nature strikes out with unfathomable fury as the unimaginable becomes a terrifying reality. Three twisters descend upon Las Vegas leaving a neon wasteland in their wake. Hurricanes tear through the Gulf Coast without warning. Record-high temperatures scorch the northeast. One-hundred-mile-an-hour winds tear across the south. Lightning storms ignite the sky. Wildfires blaze out of control. For Amy Harkin, a budding Chicago anchorwoman looking for her big break, the fear of these weather anomalies is second only to the dread of the inevitable repercussions: rolling coast-to-coast blackouts and the dwindling sources needed to revive them. With the worse power breakdown on record looming, an overload could cripple the nation and leave the entire population in the dark, without communication and vulnerable to unthinkable dangers. |

13 Going on 30 $14.99 13 Going on 30 — a romantic comedy about a misfit teen in 1987 who turns into a glamorous, successful adult in 2004 seemingly overnight — has a soundtrack that, appropriately enough, features 13 songs that span the ’80s to the 2000s. The album plays a little fast and loose with what a 13-year-old girl in 1987 would’ve actually listened to; three of the album’s best songs, the Go-Go’s’ “Head Over Heels,” Rick Springfield’s “Jesse’s Girl,” and Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House” are early-’80s classics, but seem like they’d be more likely found in the record collection of that 13-year-old’s older brother or sister. Similarly, Vanilla Ice’s 1990 guilty pleasure “Ice Ice Baby” comes from the years that the film’s heroine seems to have lost. Tracks from the first wave of boy bands, such as New Edition or New Kids on the Block, or college rock or synth pop from the soundtracks from any of the John Hughes films from the mid-’80s would’ve been more authentic, but nitpicking aside, songs like Madonna’s “Crazy for You,” Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,” and Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield” do more or less capture the era. As for the 21st century artists, Ingram Hill’s “Will I Ever Make It Home” doesn’t make much of an impression, but Lillix’s cover of “What I Like About You” is serviceable, not as authentically gritty as the Donnas but a lot less sugary than the teen pop that usually appears on this kind of soundtrack. Liz Phair’s “Why Can’t I?” — a song by a thirty-something carefully edited to appeal to 13-year-olds — captures the feeling of the soundtrack: knowing and maybe a little contrived, but sweet to listen to nevertheless. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi |

Excerpt: Haymarket Theatre – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Haymarket Theatre, ca. 1900The First Haymarket Theatre or Little Theatre was built in 1720 by John Potter, carpenter, on the site of The King’s Head Inn in the Haymarket and a shop in Suffolk Street kept by Isaac Bliburgh, a gunsmith, and known by the sign of the Cannon and Musket. It was the third public theatre opened in the West End. The theatre cost £1000 to build, with a further £500 expended on decorations, scenery and costumes. It opened on December 29, 1720, with a French play La Fille a la Morte, ou le Badeaut de Paris performed by a company later known as ‘The French Comedians of His Grace the Duke of Montague’. Potter’s speculation was known as The New French Theatre. The theatre’s first major success was a 1729 production of a play by Samuel Johnson of Cheshire Hurlothrumbo, or The Supernatural, which ran for 30 nights not as long as John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera (62 performances), but still a long run for the time. In 1730 it was taken over by an English company, and its name changed to the ‘Little Theatre in the Haymarket’. Among the actors who appeared there before 1737 when the theatre was closed under the Licensing Act 1737 were Aaron Hill, Theophilus Cibber, and Henry Fielding. In the eight to ten years before the Act was passed, the Haymarket was an alternative to John Rich’s Theatre Royal, Covent Garden and the opera-dominated Drury Lane Theatre. Fielding himself was responsible for the instigation of the Act, having produced a play called The Historical Register that parodied prime minister Robert Walpole, as the caricature, Quidam. Playwright and Poet Laureate Colley Cibber, the first actor-managerIn particular, it was an alternative to the pantomime and special-effect… More: |

Excerpt: Broadway Tower is a folly located on Broadway Hill, A44 between Evesham and Moreton-in-Marsh , one mile (1.6 km) south-east of the village of Broadway , Worcestershire , England , at the second highest point of the Cotswolds after Cleeve Hill . Broadway Tower’s base is 1,024 feet (312 metres) above sea level. The tower itself stands 55 feet (17 metres ) high. Today, it is a tourist attraction with various exhibitions open to the public for a small fee. The “Saxon” tower was designed by James Wyatt in 1794 to resemble a mock castle , and built for Lady Coventry in 1799. The tower was built on a “beacon ” hill, where beacons were lit on special occasions. Lady Coventry wondered if a beacon on this hill could be seen from her house in Worcester – approximately 22 miles (35 km) away – and sponsored the construction of the folly to find out. The beacon could be seen clearly.Over the years, the tower was home to the printing press of Sir Thomas Phillipps , and served as a country retreat for artists including William Morris .The tower is on the Cotswold Way ; it is reached by following the Cotswold Way from the A44 road at Fish Hill, or by a steep climb out of Broadway village.Near the tower is a memorial to the crew of an A.W.38 Whitley bomber that crashed there during a training mission in June 1943.WWII Bomber memorial.References (URLs online) Websites (URLs online) Coordinates : 52°127N 1°509W / 52.02417°N 1.83583°W / 52.02417; -1.83583A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at History of the Anglo-Saxons is a writing by English historian Sharon Turner written between 1799 and 1805. It was the first of four great strikes that rocked Australasia in the 1890s, and though it ended in defeat for the Australian labour movement , it demonstrated the growing social power of trade union organisation co-ordinated by Trades and Labour Councils , and was an important cause in the introduction of the arbitration system for industrial disputes and the formation of the Australian Labor Party .Maritime strike The dispute began on 15 August 1890 when the Mercantile Marine Officers’ Association directed its members to give 24 hours’ notice to their employers after negotiations broke down with the Steamship Owners’ Association of Victoria over longstanding pay and conditions claims. A bay filly by Bryan G, she was out of Satsuma whose dam was Hildene, a “blue hen” mare and the first horse owned by Chenery. Sired by the 1926 Kentucky Derby winner Bubbling Over , Hildene cost him $600.Cicada was trained by Casey Hayes, who also trained Hill Prince , First Landing , and Sir Gaylord. Hayes believed in starting his horses young, so Cicada first raced in February 1961 at Hialeah Park Race Track and won easily by four and a half lengths. She won one allowance race and lost one before being entered in her first stakes race. Still a bit green, she lost the Fashion Stakes but then romped home in her third allowance. And then she wired the Blue Hen Stakes , winning by five and a half lengths. Cicada was never out of the money in her sixteen starts as a two-year-old. She won eleven of those races, six of them consecutively . The money she earned in that first year was a record for her sex.In her first race as a three year old, she took on her elders as well as males, and won. By now, racing officials were piling on the weight. Carrying much more weight than her competitors, Cicada continued to win or place. After she won the Oaks Prep with ease, there was talk of entering her in the Kentucky Derby but it didn’t happen. It proved a fateful decision, since Sir Gaylord, who had been entered instead, turned up lame. Cicada went into the Kentucky Oaks and won by |

1962 Formula One season $59 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 1962 Formula One season was the 13th season of FIA Formula One motor racing. It featured the 1962 World Championship of Drivers and the 1962 International Cup for F1 Manufacturers which were contested concurrently over a nine race series that commenced on May 20 and ended on December 29. The season also included a number of non-championship races for Formula One cars. Ferrari were completely eclipsed in 1962, partly as a result of internal upheavals, partly because the British teams had made great progress. BRM finally came good with Graham Hill taking the championship after a season long battle with the revolutionary monocoque Lotus 25 driven by Jim Clark. Dan Gurney gave Porsche their only grand prix win at Rouen, and Cooper won their last race until 1966. Lola made their first of their sporadic forays into grand prix racing, and Jack Brabham emerged as a constructor, scoring his first points in his own car. Stirling Moss, one of the great drivers, crashed heavily before the championship season begun and never raced in a grand prix again. |

Schumacher’s win confirmed him as 1995 Drivers’ Champion as Hill could not pass Schumacher’s points total with only two races remaining. Hill started the race alongside Coulthard on the front row, amidst pressure from the British media for not being “forceful” enough in battles. Schumacher attempted to drive around the outside of Hill at the first corner, but Hill held Schumacher off as Jean Alesi, driving for Ferrari, got past both on the inside line to take second position. As a result, Hill dropped down to third and Schumacher dropped down to fifth behind Gerhard Berger. Schumacher managed to get past Alesi and Hill during the first of three pit stops. 1996 $13.98 In late 1995, Merle Haggard stood on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry House, acknowledging the music industry’s ovation as he accepted his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. A few months later, however, his next album came out with no fanfare at all. His record company didn’t send promotional copies to reviewers until the album had been out for nearly a month, and no advertising or promotion has been devoted to the music. The album artwork and cover reflect this lack of care: the title, 1996, is boxed on the cover like a tomb, exactly like Hag’s last set, 1994. What’s inside deserves more attention. Recorded in Bakersfield, Haggard’s album takes a jaunty yet melancholy look at a middle-aged man’s concerns. Not everything works; “Kids Get Lonesome Too” has a grandfatherly sentimentality, but it’s not very substantial. The rest carries plenty of meat: “Sin City Blues” bemoans the temptations of New Orleans with Dixieland verve; “Beer Can Hill” is a humorous reminiscence about honky tonkin’ in Bakersfiel; and “Untanglin’ My Mind” (a hit for co-writer Clint Black) is a textbook example of the difference between the stiff perfection of Nashville over-production and the loose, life-affirming musicianship that Haggard prefers. The album’s standout is a cover of Iris Dement’s great “No Time to Cry,” which Haggard fills with aged, tired wisdom. ~ Michael McCall, Rovi |

At the second start, championship leader and pole sitter Mika Häkkinen spun his car at the first corner and was hit by Johnny Herbert’s car forcing them both to retire from the race. Over the course of several months, the fledgling nation repelled the attackers and began to thrive. • In the Jordan Valley and the Negev Desert, farmers are cultivating 5 million flowers a day. In addition, this diverse land also produces melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, and pineapple, special strains of peaches and apples, and strawberries. Truly, the land is again blooming like a rose, to fulfill other prophecies. |

This book is not so much about military strategy as the implications of the battles that were vital in shaping civilization as we know it.Some of the battles in this book are familiar to us all-Bunker Hill, which prevented the American Revolution from being stillborn, and Marathon, which kept the world’s first democracy alive. Others may be less familiar-the naval battle at Diu (on the Indian Coast), which led to the ascendancy of Western Civilization and the discovery of America, and Yarmuk, which made possible the spread of Islam from Morocco to the Philippines. |

A Bend in the Yellow River $165.48 Arriving in Yuncheng, China as a starry-eyed 21-year-old teacher, Justin Hill expected the legend. A Book of Princeton Verse $23.5 Used – Excerpt from book: Old Pines Permanent and ancient pines along the sky Silently stand with rugged arms outspread; Serene gray ghosts, defiant and alone, Grim sentinels among the lost hill roads. They whisper in the autumn wind, as old men Murmur the glory of departed comrades, Then turn weak limbs to fight the white-robed storms That gallop wildly over barren hills. Old trees, you who whisper in the twilight, Soughing softly your secret of assurance, Grant me, pray, a moment of clear visi |

A Brave Boy and a Good Soldier: John C. C. Hill and the Texas Expedition to Mier $1.99 Shortly before his fourteenth birthday, John Christopher Columbus Hill left home with his father and older brother to join the ill-fated 1842 Texas expedition to Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico, to end any questions over ownership of Texas. John Hill’s capture and subsequent adoption by President Antonio López de Santa Anna is one of the most fascinating and curious to come out of this extraordinary episode in Texas history. After a series of escalating events, including Mexican Gen. Adrián Woll’s sudden siege of San Antonio, the Texas Rangers sent out a call for volunteers. On Christmas Day, 1842, the Texans encountered the Mexican army at Mier, and the ensuing battle lasted until the next afternoon. During the fight, John Hill killed at least twelve Mexican soldiers; his brother was seriously wounded; and all of the surviving Texans were captured. John was sent back to Mexico City, while his father and brother stayed with the rest of the group. The Texan prisoners subsequently escaped from prison and were recaptured. A furious Santa Anna demanded that they all be executed. The ensuing decision, to execute one-tenth of the group through a drawing of black beans from a jar, is one of the most legendary events in Texas history. In Mexico City, young John Hill asked President Santa Anna to release his father and brother, who were still in prison. Santa Anna agreed, on the condition that he be allowed to adopt John and raise him in Mexico. John’s father agreed, and he and John’s brother returned to Texas. John stayed in Mexico City and was enrolled at the Colegio de Mineria, or College of Mining, from which he graduated in 1850 with a doctorate in engineering and a degree inmining. The story of John C. C. Hill is one of the most remarkable stories to emerge from Texas’s struggle for independence. This volume, offered with an educator’s guide for classroom use, will appeal to young and old readers alike.Author Biography: MARY MARGARET MCALLEN AMBERSON is |

This be the verse you grave for me: ‘ Here he lies where he longed to be, Home is the sailor, home from the sea, And the hunter home from the hill.’ ” — R. L. S. WHEN Robert Louis Stevenson was thirty-three, he surprised his old nurse, ” Cummie,” with the announcement that he meant to dedicate to her his first volume of poetry. She, he told her, in the letter from Nice containing this news, was the only person who would really understand it. ” He must have felt that he was doing a piece of work altogether admirable,” is the comment of Professor William P. Trent upon this pretty incident, and, adds this subtle critic, ” he made a wonderfully successful book because he based it on real experience” — he had taken walks in ” A Child’s Garden of Verses,” swung in its trees, peeped over its wall. Marred as his boyhood had been by illness, adds Professor Trent, ” it had been that rare thing in these modern days,” a true childhood. For that one reason was it possible for him to produce such a masterpiece of verse for the young as that beginning : ” We built a ship upon the stairs.” ” Underwoods ” was a book of poetry for older readers, brought out simultaneously in |

Friday, March 26. After spending nine days within the cloistered walls at Girgenti, I took leave of my hospitable and reverend fathers, and continued my journey to Alicata. I proceeded by the Convent of St. Nicolo to the Porta di Mare, and then directed my course toward the sea coast, passing the rivers Ruscello nnd Hypsa. I had the satisfaction of casting a farewell glance on the beautiful temples of Juno, Concord, and Hercules. At this point the country loses its charms. It is no longer broken into gentle rising eminences, clothed with olive, carob, and almond trees; but the eye wanders over a wild, stony, and open district, with scarcely a tree to relieve the view, in the space between Girgenti and Palma. This latpetty town unites within its fruitful territory a more abundant share of natural beauties than I have hitherto seen during my tour in Sicily. On leaving an open and extensive district, rich in corn, I approached Palma, through an agreeable and fertile country, in the highest state of cultivation, abounding in grain, olives, almonds, pomegranates, 6g and carob trees. The last grew in a singular form, the height not being considerable, but the branches spreading to a wide circumference, and resting on all sides on the ground. The pleasing variation of hill and dale, and a view of the sea caught at the distance of three miles, enhanced the beauty of the prospect, which is peculiarly rich and agreeable. The town is situated on the declivity of a hill, and being built of u whitish stone, exhibits an extremely neat appearance. After dinner I proceeded to Alicata.
